12 Best Beaches on Koh Phangan (A Local's Guide)
Koh Phangan has over 30 beaches, and they’re wildly different from each other. Some are long stretches of soft white sand with beach bars and sunbeds. Others are hidden coves accessible only by boat or jungle hike. Some are perfect for families. Others are basically open-air parties.
We’ve been on this island long enough to have opinions about all of them. Here are the 12 best beaches on Koh Phangan — what makes each one special, how to get there, and who it’s best for.
1. Haad Rin
Best for: Full Moon Party, socializing, convenience
Haad Rin is two beaches in one. The Sunrise side (Haad Rin Nok) is the famous Full Moon Party beach — a long curve of sand that transforms from a relaxed beach by day into the world’s most famous beach party by night. The Sunset side (Haad Rin Nai) is quieter, with calmer water and fewer people.
During the day, Sunrise Beach is genuinely pleasant. The sand is fine, the water is warm, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants within steps. It gets busy during Full Moon week but is surprisingly chill the rest of the month.
Eclipse Hostel is just 100 meters from Haad Rin Beach, making this our home beach. If you’re staying with us, you’re already here.
- How to get there: Walk from Eclipse — it’s a one-minute stroll
- Facilities: Bars, restaurants, sunbed rental, shops
- Swimming: Good, though it can be shallow at low tide
2. Haad Yao (Long Beach)
Best for: Swimming, snorkeling, a classic beach day
Haad Yao is probably the most universally appealing beach on the island. It’s a long stretch of golden sand with clear water, good snorkeling on the rocky ends, and enough beach bars to keep you fed and watered without feeling overdeveloped.
The water here is excellent for swimming — deeper than some other beaches and generally calm. The snorkeling off the southern rocks is surprisingly good, with colorful fish and occasional sea turtles.
- How to get there: 30 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, on the west coast
- Facilities: Beach bars, restaurants, massage huts, accommodation nearby
- Swimming: Excellent — one of the best swimming beaches on the island
3. Thong Nai Pan
Best for: Beautiful scenery, a quieter beach with good infrastructure
Thong Nai Pan is actually two bays — Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai — separated by a rocky headland. Both are stunning, with mountains dropping down to white sand and turquoise water.
Thong Nai Pan Noi (the smaller bay) is more developed with resorts and restaurants. Thong Nai Pan Yai (the larger bay) is wider and more spread out. Either way, you’re looking at some of the most photogenic beach scenery on Koh Phangan.
The road to Thong Nai Pan has been significantly improved in recent years but still has some steep, winding sections. Take it slow on a motorbike, especially if the road is wet.
- How to get there: 40 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, northeast coast
- Facilities: Restaurants, resorts, small shops
- Swimming: Very good — sheltered bays with calm water
4. Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)
Best for: Adventure seekers, stunning scenery, getting away from it all
Bottle Beach is many people’s favorite beach on Koh Phangan, and it earns that reputation. It’s a pristine stretch of sand backed by jungle, with crystal-clear water and very few people.
The catch? It’s not easy to get to. You can either take a longtail boat from Chaloklum (about 15 minutes, 100–200 THB per person) or hike in through the jungle (30–45 minutes, steep and slippery in places). The difficulty of access is exactly what keeps it beautiful.
A few small restaurants on the beach serve basic Thai food and drinks, so you can make a full day of it.
- How to get there: Boat from Chaloklum or jungle hike from the road
- Facilities: Basic restaurants, limited shade structures
- Swimming: Excellent — clear, calm water with good snorkeling
- Tip: Bring water and cash — there are no ATMs
5. Haad Salad
Best for: Snorkeling, calm water, families
Haad Salad is a sheltered bay on the northwest coast with calm, clear water that’s excellent for snorkeling. The coral reef close to shore means you can spot tropical fish without even going deep.
The beach itself is pretty and well-maintained, with a few resorts and restaurants but no overwhelming development. It’s the kind of beach where you can spend a full day without feeling like you need to compete for space.
- How to get there: 35 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, northwest coast
- Facilities: Restaurants, resorts, snorkel equipment rental
- Swimming: Great for snorkeling — calm and clear
6. Mae Haad and Koh Ma
Best for: The sandbar walk, snorkeling, unique experience
Mae Haad beach is connected to the small island of Koh Ma by a natural sandbar that you can walk across at low tide. It’s one of the most photographed spots on Koh Phangan, and it genuinely delivers.
The snorkeling around Koh Ma is some of the best on the island, with healthy coral and abundant marine life. Time your visit for low tide so you can walk across to the island, then snorkel the waters on either side.
- How to get there: 40 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, northwest tip
- Facilities: A couple of restaurants, snorkel rental
- Swimming: Excellent snorkeling — the water around Koh Ma is teeming with fish
- Tip: Check tide times before you go — the sandbar is only walkable at low tide
7. Chaloklum
Best for: Local atmosphere, seafood, a non-touristy beach
Chaloklum is a working fishing village on the north coast, and its beach has a completely different feel from the tourist beaches. You’ll see fishing boats pulled up on the sand, locals going about their day, and seafood restaurants serving the morning catch.
The beach isn’t the prettiest for sunbathing, but the atmosphere is authentic and the seafood is the freshest on the island. It’s also the departure point for boats to Bottle Beach.
- How to get there: 30 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin
- Facilities: Restaurants, shops, boat services
- Best for: Lunch, local culture, catching a boat to Bottle Beach
8. Haad Khom
Best for: Quiet solitude, off-the-beaten-path
Haad Khom is one of those beaches that most tourists never find, even though it’s relatively easy to reach. It’s a small, quiet cove on the north coast with a handful of basic bungalows and restaurants.
The water is clear, the crowd is almost nonexistent most days, and there’s good snorkeling on the rocky sides. If you want a beach day without seeing another tourist, Haad Khom is your spot.
- How to get there: 30 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, signposted off the main road
- Facilities: Minimal — a couple of basic restaurants
- Swimming: Good, with decent snorkeling on the reef edges
9. Than Sadet
Best for: History, waterfalls, nature lovers
Than Sadet beach is notable for its connection to the Than Sadet waterfall — a series of cascades that were visited by several Thai kings and are considered sacred. The beach itself is rocky in parts but has beautiful stretches of sand.
The real draw is combining a beach visit with a hike to the waterfall. The Than Sadet National Park trail takes you along the river past multiple tiers of waterfalls, some with natural swimming pools. It’s one of the best nature experiences on the island.
- How to get there: 35 minutes by motorbike from Haad Rin, east coast. The road is rough in parts.
- Facilities: Basic — a few guesthouses and restaurants
- Swimming: Rocky in places — better for exploring than swimming
- Tip: Combine with the waterfall hike for a full day out
10. Zen Beach
Best for: Sunset watching, laid-back vibes, west coast charm
Zen Beach sits on the west coast near Sri Thanu, making it one of the best sunset spots on the island. It’s a small, relaxed beach with a bohemian atmosphere that fits right in with Sri Thanu’s yoga and wellness scene. The Beachub coworking space is right nearby, so you’ll often see digital nomads unwinding here after a day’s work.
The water is calm and shallow, and the sunsets here are genuinely spectacular — bring a drink and settle in.
- How to get there: Road accessible from Sri Thanu, about 5.5 km from Thong Sala
- Facilities: Nearby restaurants and bars in Sri Thanu
- Swimming: Calm, shallow water — good for relaxing
- Tip: Come for sunset — it’s one of the best viewpoints on the west coast
11. Haad Yuan
Best for: Party vibes, speedboat adventure, a unique beach scene
Haad Yuan has its own distinct energy. Accessible primarily by speedboat from Haad Rin (5 minutes, 100–150 THB), this beach has a collection of bars and bungalows that create a semi-permanent party atmosphere without the scale of Haad Rin.
Guy’s Bar on neighboring Haad Tien is a Koh Phangan institution, famous for its sunset views and music. The beach itself is rocky in parts but has nice sandy sections, and the limited access keeps the crowds manageable.
- How to get there: Speedboat from Haad Rin pier (runs regularly during the day)
- Facilities: Bars, bungalows, restaurants
- Swimming: Decent — rocky in some areas
- Tip: Last boats back to Haad Rin leave in the late afternoon — check the schedule or plan to stay
12. Secret Beach
Best for: The thrill of discovery, a truly hidden spot
Also known as Haad Son, Secret Beach sits on the west coast between Zen Beach and Haad Yao. Despite the name, it’s no longer much of a secret — but it’s still gorgeous. A small, sheltered bay with soft sand, clear water, and a handful of bungalows and a beach bar.
What makes it special is the combination of accessibility (you can drive here) and the feeling of being tucked away from the main tourist trail. It’s quieter than Haad Yao but has just enough facilities to spend a comfortable day.
- How to get there: Drive to the west coast between Sri Thanu and Haad Yao — look for signs to Haad Son
- Facilities: A few bungalow operations with restaurants and a beach bar
- Swimming: Good, depending on conditions
- Tip: Bring water, snacks, and a sense of adventure
